Reading Notes: Divine Archer: Part A

Divine Archer
By F.J. Gould

The book begins with the birth of Dasaratha's sons with Rama being the greatest of his two brothers. His other three brothers are Bharata, Lakshama, Shatrughna born from Kaikeyi and Sumitra. Rama is loved by all and even in his young age, he is able to master the Vedas. It is also thought that Rama is a comic being. One day, Vishvamitra comes and visits King Dasaratha and convinces him to let Rama come with him. Additionally, his brother Lakshmana goes with him as well. They fight some demons and then they are taken to a tournament field in the city of Videha. They explore the city and are taken to King Janaka. There, Rama sees Sita for the first time and they immediately fall in love. In a dream Rama realizes that he must bend the bow of Shiva. Rama attempts to bend Shiva's bow, but he bends it so that it breaks. Everyone is in a stupor and shortly Parashurama reveals himself and ask about the bow. Lakshmana tells everyone that Rama did and instead of punishing Rama, Parashurama gives Rama the bow of Vishnu which Rama easily strings together. Because Rama does this, King Janaka lets Rama marry Sita. Additionally, his other three brothers marry on the same day to other people. They return home to Ayodhya and Dasaratha plans on making Rama his successor. His servant Manthara conspires against him and makes it so that Bharata becomes his successor. Rama is then exiled for fourteen years. Therefore, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana leave the city and cross into the forest across the Ganges. While Rama and his crew are away, Dasharatha realizes what is happening due to his actions in the past. After realizing this, he dies. Once Bharata becomes aware of what happened, he is in agony. He curses his mother and seeks out Rama so that he may come back home and be the rightful heir. Rama refuses to do so. Rama visits Agastya who blesses his with divine weapons. A demon falls in love with Rama, but Rama refuses because he is already married. She then attempts to get with Lakshmana, but he mutilates her. She sends armies after them but they both defeat the armies with ease. Her brother, Ravana, then gets involved and employs Maricha to trick Rama and steal Sita. Through their plan, Sita gets captured by Ravana steals Sita and ask her to be his queen. She refuses, but that doesn't matter to Ravana because he steals her anyway. He battles Jatayu, who is defeated, but lives long enough to tell Rama and Lakshmana what happened. The brothers travel along and meet Sugriva and Hanuman. Rama and Sugriva agree to help each other with their problems. First, they go meet Vali - Sugriva's brother - to confront him.
