The Secret to Raising Smart Kids

Many people assume that superior intelligence or ability is the key to success. But more than three decades of research shows that an overemphasis on intellect or talent—and the implication that such traits are innate and fixed—leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unmotivated to learn. Teaching people to have a “growth mindset,” which encourages a focus on “process” rather than on intelligence or talent, produces high achievers in school and in life. Parents and teachers can engender a growth mindset in children by praising them for their persistence or strategies (rather than for their intelligence), by telling success stories that emphasize hard work and love of learning, and by teaching them about the brain as a learning machine.

Favorite Places

My two favorite places that I will be discussing are the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Central Park in NYC. Backpacking is just one of my many hobbies and I recently took a trip to the Rocky Mountains and backpacked for a week there. It was absolutely fantastic! There is nothing like camping and being outdoors away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Heaven is truly a place on earth when you're outdoors.  This is a picture of Hallett Peak and Dream Lake. (Hallett Peak and Dream Lake: NPS ) From my trip to NYC over the summer, Central Park was one my favorite places. It was amazing to me that in such an active city, there were still places that you could go that made you feel like you weren't in the city. It was also cool to see so many people taking advantage of the public space doing all sorts of activities. Whenever I go back to NYC, Central Park will be a definite go to place to visit again.
